The Manners of Laughing فائدة .. التبسم والضحك Benefit…smiling and laughing

The Noble Sheik Abu Abdullah Abdur Rahman ibn Sa’dee, may Allah have mercy upon him, said
“Therefore Sulaiman peace and blessings are upon him, heard her (the ant’s) statement and he understood it,
So he (Sulaiman) smiled, amused at her speech” (Chapter 27 verse 19)
So he admired her advice to her nation and the good way she expressed herself. And this is the condition of the Prophets, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon them, they had complete manners and they would show admiration or be impressed at the right times although their laughter would not go beyond a smile. Such was the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings are upon him, most of his laughter was (only) smiling.
Because verily boisterous laughing ( القهقهة ) is a sign of foolishness and bad manners and not smiling and being impressed at those things that are impressive is a sign of vile character and arrogance; and the Messengers are free from such a thing.
End of Sheik’s speech

Standing the night of the 15th of Sha’baan in prayer and fasting during it’s day

Question: Is standing the night of the 15th of Sha’baan in prayer and fasting during it’s day legislated?
Response: Nothing firm and reliable has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) that he stood in prayer in the night and fasted during the day of the 15th of Sha’baan. So the night of the 15th of Sha’baan is like any other night, and if someone is a regular worshipper during other nights, then he may stand the night in prayer on this night without assuming anything special (because of it being the night of the 15th of Sha’baan). This is because specifying a time for any act of worship requires a authentic proof, so if there is no authentic proof then the act is regarded as an innovation and all innovations are misguidance. Likewise, regarding specifically fasting during the 15th day of Sha’baan, then no (authentic) proof has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) to indicate the legislation of fasting on that particular day.
As for that which is mentioned from the ahaadeeth regarding this subject, then all of it is weak as the people of knowledge have indicated. However, whoever has the habit of fasting the 13th, 14th and 15th (of every month), then he can continue and fast during Sha’baan as he fasts during the other months, without assuming anything special about the 15th of Sha’baan. Also, the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) used to increase in fasting during this month (Sha’baan), however, he did not particularise the 15th day, rather proceeded as per norm.

One of the reported instructions ‘Umar wrote to Abû Mûsâ Al-Ash’arî and those under his governance during the former’s Caliphate was, “Seek knowledge and understanding of (fiqh) the Sunnah and seek knowledge and understanding of Arabic.”

Ibn Abî Shaybah, Al-Musannaf Vol.6 p126.

It is reported that he said, “Learn Arabic, for it strengthens the intelligence and increases one’s noble conduct
(al-murû`ah).”
Al-Bayhaqî, Shu’ab Al-Îmân Vol.4 p187.

It is also reported that he said, “Do not learn the language of the non-Arabs, and do not enter upon them in their churches on their festivals, for indeed wrath descends upon them.”

‘Abd Al-Razzâq Al-San’ânî, Al-Musannaf Vol.1 p411.

It is also reported that he was once circumambulating the Ka’bah when he heard two men speaking in a language other than Arabic behind him. He turned to them and said, “Find some way to learn Arabic.”

‘Abd Al-Razzâq Al-San’ânî, Al-Musannaf Vol.5 p496.

Days missed from previous Ramadan must be made up for before the next Ramadan

Q: If Ramadan comes and someone still has days of Sawm (Fasting) to make up for from the previous Ramadan, are they considered sinful for not having made up the days before the start of the next Ramadan? Do they have to make a Kaffarah (expiation) or not?
A: Everyone who has days to make up from previous Ramadan has to make up for those days before the next Ramadan. They may delay making up for them until Sha‘ban, but if the next Ramadan comes and they still have not made up for those days, without an excuse, they are considered sinful for that. They should make up for these days later and also feed a needy person for each missed day. This was the Fatwa (legal opinion) given by a group of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet). The required amount of food is half a Sa‘ (1 Sa‘ = 2.172 kg) of the staple food of your country to be given to some or just one needy person for every day not fasted. If you are excused for the delay by reason of illness or travel, you just have to make up for the Sawm; you do not have to feed needy people. This is according to the general rule in the Saying of Allah (Glorified be He): ...and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah is the Grantor of success!

INNOVATION ALERT - 15th Sha'baan 1433 / Thursday 5th July 2012

Specifying the day of the 15th of Sha'baan by fasting or reciting the Qur.aan or performing naafilah prayers
ref: http://www.fatwa-online.com/fataawa/innovations/celebrations/cel005/0001102_2.htm

Question: We see some people specifying the 15th of Sha'baan with particular supplications and reciting the Qur.aan and performing naafilah prayers. So what is the correct position concerning this, and may Allaah reward you with good?

Standing the night of the 15th of Sha'baan in prayer and fasting during it's day
ref: http://www.fatwa-online.com/fataawa/innovations/celebrations/cel005/0001102_3.htm

Question: Is standing the night of the 15th of Sha'baan in prayer and fasting during it's day legislated?

Response: Nothing firm and reliable has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) that he stood in prayer in the night and fasted during the day of the 15th of Sha'baan. So the night of the 15th of Sha'baan is like any other night, and if someone is a regular worshipper during other nights, then he may stand the night in prayer on this night without assuming anything special (because of it being the night of the 15th of Sha'baan). This is because specifying a time for any act of worship requires a authentic proof, so if there is no authentic proof then the act is regarded as an innovation and all innovations are misguidance. Likewsie, regarding specifically fasting during the 15th day of Sha'baan, then no (authentic) proof has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) to indicate the legislation of fasting on that particular day.

Giving sadaqah specifically on the night of 15th of Sha'baan
ref: http://www.fatwa-online.com/fataawa/innovations/celebrations/cel005/0001102_1.htm

Question: When my father was alive, he entrusted me to give sadaqah (charity) according to my means on the 15th of Sha'baan every year, and likewise I have been doing this ever since. However, some people have admonished me for doing so saying it is not permissible. So is giving sadaqah on the night of the 15th of Sha'baan permissible according to the willment of my father or not? Kindly advise us and may Allaah reward you with good.

Response: To specify the giving of sadaqah on the night of the 15th of Sha'baan every year is an innovation, and despite your father having entrusted you with that, it is not permissible. It is befitting you give this sadaqah without specifying the night of the 15th of Sha'baan, rather do so every year and in whichever month, but without particularising any one month (on a consistent basis). However, it is permissible to do so in the month of Ramadhaan (for the evidence which indicates so).

And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

council, an assembly = (majlis) مَجْلِس

Plural: مَجَالِس
Associated verb: to sit جَلَسَ (يَجْلِسُ) - جُلُوْسًا

Examples

O ye who believe! When ye are told to make room in the assemblies, (spread out and) make room: (ample) room will God provide for you - Quran, 58:11
On the authority of Abu Musa, that the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, said, "When one of you passes through an assembly (of people) or a market, and he is holding arrows, let him grasp them by their arrow-head, again let him grasp them by their arrow-head, again let him grasp them by their arrow-head" - Muslim
حَلّ مَجْلِسُ الوُزَرَاءِ الْبَاكِسْتَانِيّ بَعْدَ الْحُكْمِ بِعَدَمِ أَهْلِيّةِ رَئِيْسِهِ The Pakistani cabinet (lit. the council of ministers) has been dissolved following the judgement against the eligibility of its Prime Minister - BBC News, Arabic

Did you know...

مَجْلِس is an example of a noun of place and time, which are formed by taking the root letters of a verb (in this case جلس ), and putting them on the morphological template مَفْعَل or مَفْعِل . So literally مَجْلِس means the the sitting-place. By extension (in this, case, synendoche, which is a type of figure of speech which, amongst other things, can be used to refer to the contents of a thing by their container, e.g. "would you like a cup", where "cup" is being used for "cup of tea"), it can also mean the people, or the gathering, at a particular sitting place, and hence an assembly.
